A City of Maples
Livonia's own street-tree inventory found that maples make up more than half of the city's roughly 38,000 street trees — Norway maple, silver maple, red maple, and sugar maple — with honeylocust next. Those same species fill the backyards. Silver maples in particular grow fast, split at weak unions, and drop big limbs in wind, so they're the tree we get called about most in Livonia.
Rosedale Gardens and the Pre-War Streets
Rosedale Gardens is on the National Register — about 570 homes, most built before World War II, on streets lined with mature trees. Colonials and English cottages sit close together on narrow lots, so removals there are rigging jobs, not drop-and-go. We've worked those streets for years.
Where the Ash Went
Green ash was almost 8 percent of Livonia's street trees before emerald ash borer reached Wayne County. The city replanted from an approved species list to avoid a repeat; a lot of homeowners never got around to it. If you still have a dead ash in the yard, it's brittle and it fails without warning — we take it down from outside the tree.
Hines Park Wind and the September Storms
Edward Hines Park runs 17 miles along the Middle Rouge through Livonia, and the neighborhoods that back up to it and to Rotary Park get the biggest trees and the worst of the wind. On September 2, 2026 the National Weather Service logged multiple trees down across Livonia in the same storm system that put nearly 300,000 metro Detroit customers in the dark. Livonia Tree Rules: Your Yard vs. the Right-of-Way
Livonia keeps this simple. The city's tree ordinance is about public trees; what's in your yard is yours. Here's the short version, and we'll walk through any of it on the estimate.
No Permit for Trees on Your Property
Livonia's tree ordinance (Chapter 12.24, Trees and Shrubs) applies to public land — streets, parks, and city-owned property. There is no city permit to trim or remove a tree in your own yard, and no replacement requirement for homeowners.
The Strip Between Sidewalk and Curb Is the City's
Trees in the right-of-way belong to Livonia, and nobody may plant, prune, or remove one without a permit from the Department of Public Works. The permit is free for residents; contractors pay a $30 fee. If you're not sure whether a tree is yours or the city's, we'll tell you on the estimate and point you to DPW at (734) 466-2655.
Tree City USA Since 1998
Livonia has held Tree City USA status since 1998 and has earned ten Growth Awards, including another in 2025. The city keeps a computerized inventory of every right-of-way tree and trims its own sections on a six-to-seven-year cycle. That's why a request to trim a street tree can take a while — and why we handle the ones in your yard.
Hazard Trees on Private Property
The one place the city can reach into your yard: if a tree is certified as a hazard to the public, the inspection department can issue a written request to remove it within ten days. Failure can mean the city removes it and bills you through a special assessment. Call us first — we'll usually have it down before the letter would arrive.
Tree Contractors Must Be Licensed by the City
Any business trimming, removing, or transporting trees in Livonia has to hold an annual license from the city. Ask any crew that shows up at your door whether they hold one.
DTE Trims the Main Lines, Not Your Service Drop
DTE clears vegetation around pole-to-pole lines at no charge, but the line from the pole to your house is your responsibility and DTE will not trim around it. That's work we do every week. And before any stump grinding or planting, call MISS DIG at 811 at least three business days ahead.
