The City is clear on this one: trees in the right-of-way — the strip between the sidewalk and the street — are City trees, not the homeowner's. If that's the tree you're worried about, the City handles it, and we'll tell you so rather than quoting you for work you don't owe.
Removal Permits Start at 6 Inches
Westland requires a tree permit for removals of trees 6 inches DBH (diameter at breast height) or greater, and applications carry a fee. Larger applications require a tree location survey prepared by a registered land surveyor and verified by a certified arborist or forester.
The Three-Tree Exemption
The full survey requirement is waived in a few cases — including removal of three or fewer trees, and removals on residential lots over an acre with an occupied home. Most single-tree homeowner jobs land in this category.
Approved Replacement Species
The City publishes an approved list for right-of-way planting — maples, oaks, lindens, locusts, hackberry, tulip tree, and others. Notably, no ash. If you're replanting after a removal, we'll steer you to something on the list.

County Roads Are a Different Office
Trees in the right-of-way along county roads — Ford, Wayne, Merriman, Middlebelt, Newburgh, Warren, Cherry Hill — fall to the Wayne County Forestry Office rather than the City.
