Tree Service in Bloomfield Hills, MI

Here's the thing about Bloomfield Hills: most people with that address don't live in the City. And the City's tree rules are far stricter than the Township's. We know which one you're in before we quote. Free estimates, licensed and insured.

Local Coverage

Check Your ZIP Before You Call Anyone

The City of Bloomfield Hills has about 4,460 residents across five square miles. Bloomfield Township, which surrounds it, has about 44,253 across twenty-six. Both use Bloomfield Hills mailing addresses, so roughly nine out of ten people who search for tree service in Bloomfield Hills actually live in the Township — where the rules are completely different. A 48301 or 48302 address is always the Township. The City is 48304. It's the kind of detail that decides whether your removal needs a plan review or not, and it's the first thing we check.

Why Homeowners Call Us

Local know-how in Bloomfield Hills

A Century-Old Canopy

Wealthy Detroit families started buying this land around 1900 and planting estate landscapes. That canopy is now 100 to 125 years old — magnificent, and squarely in the age range where big hardwoods start failing. A lot of what we're called out for here is a tree that looked fine right up until it didn't.

Oak Wilt Moves Underground Here

Michigan DNR guidance is not to prune oaks April 15 to July 15 — beetles carry spores into fresh cuts and red oaks can die within weeks. But the bigger risk on large wooded lots is root grafting: the fungus moves tree to tree underground through connected roots. Dense mature oak stands on contiguous estate parcels are exactly the setup where that happens. We plan oak work for the dormant season and look at the whole stand, not just the one tree.

Lake Lots and Long Approaches

Forest, Gilbert, Island, Lower and Upper Long, Meadow, Orange, Wabeek, Wing — the area is full of them, and lakefront removals mean rope work over water and seawalls. Long private drives and gated approaches also mean we check access and weight limits before we bring equipment down them.

Rouge River Headwaters

Bloomfield Township makes up the headwaters of the Rouge River watershed, and the City drains entirely to the Rouge. Low, wet ground means shallow root plates and higher windthrow risk — which is why so much storm damage here is whole trees going over rather than limbs breaking.

Local Rules

Bloomfield Hills Tree Permits: City vs. Township

These two jurisdictions have opposite rules, and the City's are the stricter ones — which is the reverse of what most people expect.

First: Which One Are You In?

A 48301 or 48302 address is Bloomfield Township. The City of Bloomfield Hills is 48304. Even landmarks get confused — Kirk in the Hills lists a Bloomfield Hills address and sits in the Township. We confirm the jurisdiction on your address before anything else.

City: Every Removal Gets Reviewed

The City of Bloomfield Hills strongly regulates tree removal to preserve its woodland character. Every tree removal on your property requires a plan review by the Building Department before any work begins, and a permit is required for removal of any regulated tree. That applies to existing homes, not just construction sites.

City: Landmark Trees and Replacements

The City ordinance defines regulated, removable, and landmark trees, with landmark trees — exceptional size, age, or significance — carrying stronger protections. Replacement plantings may be required, and unauthorized removal is a misdemeanor that can bring replacement trees, restitution payments into the city tree fund, or liens. Call the Building Department at (248) 644-1520 before starting any tree work.

City: Ash Is Exempt

Ash, horse chestnut, autumn olive, and box elder are treated as nuisance species and exempted. Given how much dead ash the emerald ash borer left behind, that makes ash removal comparatively straightforward here — but confirm with the City rather than assuming.

Township: Only Construction and Clear-Cutting

Bloomfield Township requires a tree permit to remove a protected or landmark tree on property undergoing new construction or redevelopment, and for any clear-cutting activity. A homeowner who isn't building is in a very different position than a City resident.

Township: What Counts as Protected

Protected trees are 8 inches DBH or greater. Landmark trees are 24 inches DBH or greater, plus certain species listed by name and diameter in the ordinance. Where replacement is required it runs 50 percent of the total diameter removed for protected trees and 100 percent for landmark trees, with replacements at least 3 inches in diameter for deciduous or 8 feet tall for evergreens. Township Planning, Building and Ordinance: (248) 433-7715.
