Full-Grown Trees on Half-Size Lots
When the village was platted in 1927, home sites were sectioned into one-acre plots with room to farm. Over the decades most of those acres were subdivided down — some parcels are now 40 by 135 feet — but the trees planted on the original lots are still standing, and they're 70 to 90 years old. That's the whole story of tree work in Garden City: oversized, mature canopy on small modern lots, close to houses, garages, fences, and overhead lines, with tight access for equipment. A few original deep lots survive where no street was ever cut through, notably between Bock and John Hauk. We work both.

Local know-how in Garden City
Working Between the Houses
Garden City's postwar bungalows and ranches sit close together, and the trees between them have outgrown the space. We rig and lower in pieces, bring a mini skid steer through the gate rather than a truck across the lawn, and leave the sod intact.
The Ash Are Gone — the Stumps Aren't
Emerald ash borer was first found near Detroit in 2002 and has killed roughly 30 million ash trees in Southeast Michigan. Most untreated ash in Garden City died years ago. What's left is standing deadwood and stumps, and we clear both.
Storm Work Across Wayne County
Straight-line winds regularly put 70 mph gusts through western Wayne County and drop limbs across driveways and roofs. We answer storm calls day or night, and we're minutes away.

Garden City Tree Rules Worth Knowing
Garden City's tree ordinance is more specific than most. Here's what actually affects homeowners.
Right-of-Way Trees Need Written Permission
The Director of Public Services controls all trees in street rights-of-way and in city parks. You can prune, plant, or remove a right-of-way tree next to your property only with written permission — and approval can come with conditions, including replanting.
Dead and Dangerous Trees Are Your Responsibility
The ordinance requires private property owners to remove dead, diseased, or dangerous trees and broken or decayed limbs that threaten public safety. It also requires keeping branches clear at least 8 feet above the street and right-of-way.
Three Species Are Banned
Poplar, willow, and boxelder can't be planted in any street or park — and not on private property within 50 feet of a street or sidewalk right-of-way either. Worth knowing before you replant.
Spacing Rules for New Trees
Shade trees must be at least 40 feet apart, none within 25 feet of a street intersection, and none where the planting strip is under 3 feet wide.
Digging Near a Tree
No excavation or driveway work within 6 feet of a tree without a written permit, and stored materials have to stay at least 4 feet back. This one catches contractors more often than homeowners.
Dutch Elm Disease
Infected elms have to be cut and disposed of on a short deadline, and moving diseased elm wood is prohibited. If you have an elm in decline, don't let it sit.
